Biography
Portuguese painter born in Évora. At the end of the 50's he attended the Arts School of Lisbon. In 1962, when he began painting, he was associated with abstract expressionism and Jackson Pollock. His work brought gesture, form and idea together. His drawings are an introspective space where he has attempted to break down his own references showing a renovation of an abstract poetic context. Between 1968 and 1990 he exbhibited in Lagos, where he had moved to. He also exhibited in Portugal and abroad, namely: 1974 AICA, Lisbon, 1975 Abstracção Hoje, 1979 Lis'79, Lisbon, 1980 Aspectos da Arte Abstracta 1970-1980, SNBA, Lisbon, 1983 Gal. Diferença, 1984 Joaquim Bravo - Pintura 1982/84, Fac. Letras de Lisboa, 1985 Signos, Gal. Emi-Valentim de Carvalho (and in 1986, 1987, 1988), A arte dos anos 80 em Portugal, SNBA, Lisbon, 1986 Arte Contemporânea em Portugal, Museu de Arte Contemporânea, Madrid, 1987 19ª Bienal de S. Paulo, 1988 Lisbonne Aujourd'hui, e Toulon Museum, France, 1989 Portugal Hoy, Centro Cultural Conde Duque, Madrid. Exposições póstumas: 1994 60's - Anos de Ruptura, Palácio Galveias, Lisbon, 1999 Museu de Serralves, Oporto. In 2000, a retrospective of his artwork was organized at na Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, CAMJAP.
